What is a SMART goal?

But first, let’s chat a little about SMART goals. If you’ve never heard of this concept before, it’s a tool to help goal setters to better reach and achieve their goals.

SMART goals are those that are:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant or Realistic to your life and values
  • Timely

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS A REALITY

1. Make sure you’re fully committed to your New Year’s resolutions

Start by setting realistic resolutions. Write them out and place them where you can easily revisit and be reminded. I usually write them out on the front page of my planner. Click here to check out my favorite planner. I also make a digital copy that I save on my phone. Another great way to keep track of and revisit your resolutions is to create a vision board. Vision boards can be both digital and hard copy. Check out my next post on creating your New Year’s vision board. But vision boards aren’t the only step!

Next, take the New Year’s resolution you’re working on and make a list of all the steps it will take to attain your goals. Getting New Year’s resolutions off the ground is easier when you break them down into smaller parts, but make sure each step is measurable and time-efficient. For example… I want to lose 10 pounds by my birthday. In order to make this New Year’s resolution a reality, I would have to commit to going to the gym twice a week and eating healthier. This is a more specific, measurable, and time-bound goal.

2. Create a plan for what you want to achieve and how you’ll get there

Once you’ve broken New Year’s resolutions down into achievable steps, create a plan of action for how you’ll get there. A new year feels great at the start, but it’s easy to get off track and feel like New Year’s resolutions are behind us by February or March. It can be helpful to set up reminders or anything that will help you stay accountable throughout. Planners or journals are a great place to set those reminders. And if you’re not into planners, place those reminders in the calendar on your smart device.

3. Share your goals with others so they can hold you accountable

Accountability is key to reaching your goals. I believe that having accountability from others is often the extra boost you need to stay motivated. Select a close friend or family member who will not let you slide or slip out of achieving your best. Be sure to tell your accountability partner or partners what New Year’s resolutions you are working on. Be intentional about checking in with them regularly!

Sis, don’t let your New Year’s resolutions be another thing on your list of things not accomplished this year! Set your resolutions and make sure you work smart and stay motivated all year with these 3 tips for success! Wishing you great success in this new year! You’ve got this! Happy New Year!
