9 Best Daily Morning Devotional Books for Kids

I don’t think there is a better way to get your kids closer to God and create a reading habit than introducing them to morning devotional books that can inspire and teach them.

Growing up in a Christian home, I got to experience firsthand how much impact a few spoken words from the Bible can help in crucial times. It also has a way of unconsciously creating a mentality that aligns with the Scriptures.

Your kids will begin to have a default setting that aligns with the scriptures. Things like fighting, cussing, or stealing, among others, will become naturally unimaginable to them.

Knowing that kids have short attention spans and do not want to be seated in one place for too long, it is necessary to select a devotional that can keep them hooked to their bed each morning.

What is a devotional?

A devotional is a book or a publication containing a series of scripture readings and illustrations for each day of the year. The main aim of a devotional is to teach and encourage consistent spiritual growth and intimacy with God.

Most devotionals contain a short devotion, a focus scripture, and a prayer point. Some devotionals also cater to different age groups and needs, and some can be based on faith, prayer, etc.

Types of devotionals

  • Audio
  • Video
  • Hardcover Books
  • Ebooks

These devotionals are all effective when it comes to teaching and learning. But, I love hardcover book devotionals with illustrations and video devotionals, especially for toddlers and tweens, because they relate more to what they see.

Observe your kid to know which format resonates more with them and use that to get their favorite devotional.

Best morning devotional books for kids

1. The Purpose-Driven Life Devotional for Kids by Rick Warren

This devotional is a 365-day scripture-based devotional for kids between 8-12, although there is an illustrated version for younger kids. It contains adult version themes but has been edited to fit young minds.

The book contains six purposes in all. Each day starts with a title, a scripture, and a short devotion to finish with a prayer. One thing I love about the book is that each devotion fits a child’s life perfectly and relates to their everyday lives as they grow.

As the name implies, the book is to help your children find their purpose in God right from a young age and let them be aware that God made them intentionally.

Pastor Rick Warren did amazingly great on this one.

2. Hope for Each Day by Billy Graham

“Each day, I turn to the Bible to give me strength and wisdom for the day and hope for the future.” Billy Graham

I especially love how Billy Graham used illustrations to explain the Bible references for each day. Rather than doctrinally explaining the verses, he made sure to present them in a way that children can relate to, and also, when they go out every day, they can look around and see God in everything around them.

This devotional is ideal for kids between 6-10 and can be used as a family devotional.

You can’t go wrong with this when it comes to giving your child a solid foundation in the scriptures. Having about 90 Bible stories with captivating illustrations and simple words your child can understand makes Bible reading more real and exciting.

The illustrations are filled with vibrant colors, and each page is a discovery for your child. Each page is covered with graphic illustrations that provide a way for you to explain events using the Bible graphically.

The devotional is suitable for children between 2-6 years of age.

4. The One-year Devotion for Preschoolers by Crystal Bowman

Fantastic! I know I’m excited about these books, and choosing a favorite is almost impossible. This devotional contains 366 toddler-relevant devotions that’ll last you an entire leap year. The amazing thing about this is that each day has a theme and a relatable story for its young readers, complete with a rhyming prayer that is easy to repeat.

It also has illustrations that represent the story for each day so your child can see instead of imagining the scenario. It is suitable for ages 3-6 and even less.

I always love when kids’ devotionals can help kids relate the Bible to their daily lives, and this devotion for preschoolers does that to a T.

6. Jesus Calling by Sarah Young

This devotional is written from the perspective of Jesus talking directly to your child. For 365 days, your child has a hotline discussion with Christ every morning. How much more amazing can it be?

Designed to take your kid deeper into God and understand His ways, it is more suitable for tweens than toddlers. Your toddler might not even like this devotional because it does not have illustrations compared to others.

Each day has a theme, scripture, short devotion, and read-on-your-own Bible verses.

7. The Action Bible Anytime Devotions by Sergio Cariello

Aside from the powerful illustrations that make it seem like you’re watching a graphical rendition of biblical events, the selling point is that each day has a real-life lesson to teach your child.

The devotions are written to address confusing feelings and indecisive actions that tweens and teenagers face daily: feelings of loneliness, bullying, social media, friendship, anger, pain, honesty, and so on. It teaches them how to navigate these feelings the God way and also includes scriptural verses and biblical examples of these feelings.

Each devotion includes action verses, practical questions, life applications, and prayers that will help build your child’s character in a godly way.

Let’s Recap!

One of the things I look for in devotional books for children is how it incorporates biblical principles into everyday life. Aside from teaching my kid that forgiveness is necessary, it should also explain how to forgive in real-life situations.

Society has become a moral eyesore; the things that society should condemn are being promoted while the things it should promote are being hidden. Even as adults, society has almost made it impossible to remember the dividing line between wrong and right. Thank God for the Bible and fellowship with other like-minded believers.

Let’s fight against these immoralities and teach our children that God’s standard has not changed. Let’s teach these young minds the right way, the Bible way!

With God’s help, we can!
