About the Osmo Coding Starter Kit

Mother and Child playing Osmo Coding Kit

We were so excited and honored to get a sneak preview of the newly released Osmo Coding Starter Kit. It surely did not disappoint! Before I get into this review, I want to share a little bit about coding. We’ve always known and heard that technology is the future. I never considered its impact on our day-to-day lives until this year due to COVID-19. Our use of technology skyrocketed within a matter of weeks. We were streaming television, downloading new games on the kid’s iPads, hosting or attending Zoom birthday parties, and using FaceTime or WhatsApp to video call our close family and friends. Our world was changing faster than we could adjust.

Then one day, it hit me! This is the way of the future for our children. We’ve got to embrace this change and expose them to this new way of learning and living: apart but together through means of technology.

The Osmo Coding Starter Kit teaches the basic concepts of coding to kids ages 5-10 years old in a fun way. Mama, before you know it, you’ll have a coder in your hands who can one day build or create their own game or app! Can you imagine that?

Coding Awbie is the beginner-level coding game in the kit. It teaches the basic concepts of coding: logical thinking, problem-solving, sequencing, and pattern recognition.  It comes with 35 levels of fun with the character, Awbie. My son enjoyed discovering how he can maneuver the magnetic pieces to make Awbie move, jump, walk, and even eat. I was truly amazed at how fast he developed the basic concepts of this game.

2. Coding Jam

Coding Jam is a fun intermediate-level game that teaches the concept of patterns, looping, rhythm, harmony, and melody to create your own music. Talk about fun! Both of my kids enjoyed playing with this one. Coding Jam has a little learning curve for the younger ones but is definitely easy to play and create. A super cool feature about this game is that you’re able to record and share your creation with your family or anyone in the Jam community!

3. Coding Duo

Coding Duo is an advanced-level game that encompasses all the basics of coding and now features the concept of collaboration and teamwork. With Duo, two players are able to play and complete puzzles side-by-side. It’s the perfect game for a family fun night or to teach your children how to play with each other.

  4. This is pretty cool and it looks like fun. I like that companies are creating more learning games for young children. Perhaps I can purchase this game from my niece and nephew, as they’re both in the 5-10 range.

  5. I’ve seen a lot of kid toys for coding and never really understood them or thought about possibly trying it out with my daughter. This one looks really interesting though. I would like to try it with her in the future. Is it only for 5 years and up?
